Wheel of Storms and Stillness

This kinetic sculpture in which a ring of spinning faces appear to animate by speaking and transform amidst a dreamscape of stars and twisted branches. The sculpture is made of multiple casts of my face that were manipulated in clay to have successively different expressions. They are mounted to a wheel that spins freely. When the wheel is in motion circuitry calculates the timing of quickly strobing stars to make the effect that successive frames of the sculpture animate in place. At the same time a tree links their heads together at their center. Its roots and branches storm wildly, like an electric dance that juxtaposes their stillness. The conflicting truths of this piece have led me to many contemplations beyond it. There is a simultaneous bond of stillness and motion, and an illusory duality of an individual face composed of many which defines its form in an ungraspable flow.
